Calgary Custom Software - Case Studies - Inventory and Logistics Management

Scamp Transport specializes in the transportation of bulk petroleum products to retail and wholesale customers. They have quietly grown their family-centred business from 3 employees and a single truck in 1981 to a vibrant organization of over 130 employees with terminals in Langley, Kamloops, Edmonton and Calgary. As a key player in a competitive industry, they realized that in order to effectively service their clients and manage their growth, they needed to carefully monitor every detail of the delivery process.

Their existing software managed a range of gasoline and diesel fuel products, tracked inventory levels and ensured volumes were maintained. This was standard industry software, good enough to meet the requirements of the major energy companies. But if there’s one thing Scamp won’t abide by, it’s service that is just “good enough”. They were ready to offer a better solution.

Scamp set out to improve their inventory management system. Initially, they planned to make a few tweaks to their current system to take their service offering to the next level. But they ran into resistance at every turn. No source code. Making changes was difficult, time-consuming and expensive. The existing software was the accepted standard. But as Jay Campbell, Scamp’s GM and CEO explains, “We believe that the opposite of courage isn’t cowardice. It’s conformity. We knew we could do better. Arcurve helped us modify our system so we could get to where we wanted to be.”

CHANGING THE WAY THE TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY ROLLS

Scamp partnered with Arcurve to create S.A.F.E. (Scamp’s Automated Fuel Environment). The application not only manages their energy products, it tracks inventory levels to guarantee zero run-outs for their customers. To optimize the efficiency of their deliveries, tankers are balanced with fuel products at each client station to ensure volumes are maximized. Exceptional, highly-trained staff offer personalized service and are informed about each nuance of the delivery.

Jay explains, “We track every bit of data. Even if it seems redundant. This data identifies patterns and helps us create a footprint. It provides results we can accurately measure. We know, in real-time, how a snowstorm or a road closure is affecting volumes at a particular station. We can react in the moment, recalibrate and generate new predictions to serve their needs immediately - rather than reading reports days later when it’s too late. The software brings exceptions forward, so we know when there’s a problem coming. We’re acting in the moment - not scrambling after the fact.”

This kind of proactive service is what caught the attention of integrated global oil companies. Winning industry awards and accolades, including the coveted “Imperial Oil Carrier of the Year” four times in five years, helped establish Scamp as the poster child for safety and reliability.

Based on this success, Scamp and Arcurve are now working on the next phase - tying the advanced dispatch and inventory management system to Scamp’s fleet tracking/GPS system for an even more comprehensive view of their business. “Arcurve not only met, but exceeded our needs,” says Jay, “Scamp and Arcurve work very well together. We have a similar philosophy that standards are not made to be met, but surpassed.”
